God is Love

The Good Samaritan

This week we learned god is love. We heard a story of a lawyer who wanted to clarify from Jesus "who is our neighbor?". Jesus told the parable of the 'Good Samaritan' where Jesus tells us that the good neighbor is anyone who recognizes the humanity in others and cares for them regardless of who they are. We also talked about thinking of what is important for people, made latkes, and ate them up.

The Prodigal Son-God as a Forgiving Parent

Have you ever forgiven a friend or relative?  Or has someone forgiven you?  One image of God is that of a forgiving parent.  God will forgive you for your sins or mistakes, just as the prodigal son was forgiven in a famous story that Jesus tells.
The kids learned the story of the prodigal son, then depicted the story in a mural which is hung up in the classroom. Come in and look at it some time.

Peaceable Kingdom

The famous painter Edward Hicks imagines what a peaceable kingdom would look like and paints an amazing picture of animals and people from all walks of life living peacefully together.  Wouldn't that be great.  Our class decided that living in peace is unrealistic due to greed, power, lack of resources, religious differences etc. However, they did come up with some rules to help promote peace such as learning to problem solve, no football, fewer rules etc.  Finally, to demonstrate the famous lion and lamb living together we produced some amazing bread in the shape of a lion and lamb. Yummmmmmmmmmm! The smell and taste of fresh bread were awesome and had the congregation hungering for some fresh bread too.

October 31, 2010

Today we learned about and celebrated Dia De Los Meurtos, The Day of the Dead. The 3-4 graders taught us about this holiday in Mexico when people celebrate their loved ones who have died. They have special altars where they light candles, wear masks, and hang colorful banners and marigolds. They might have a celebration at the graveyard where they bring the dead their favorite foods. We got to make our own masks and paper marigolds. It was a fun celebration.

Today we had a special service run by the Environmental Ministry group. We watched a video about kids protesting different injustices, including environmental protests. Each of us made a sign for environmental issues they were concerned about and marched through Elliot Hall when service let out.

We learned that the tv doesn't have a fast forward, and that speakers and a computer worked much better than the tv. On a now serious note we watch a part of the ten commandments, in the part that we watched Moses saw and talked to a burning bush (god). We also finished making journals.

Oct 3 God Images

This week we finished our God Images video. We are going to learn about other peoples faiths. We talked about how other people see god. Some people have images of god, but some religions think of it as something so above there is no image possible.

God Images Powerpoint Sunday the 19th

Hi All,

Chac Mool (Mayan God)
We watched  a Powerpoint on God Images and had dynamic discussions on the important questions in life such as how did life begin, why do people hate, why do people die etc.  We talked about how some people believe in a God that helps them to answer these questions.

We also took photos of ourselves to make a class bulletin board of who is in the class.

And we made a schedule of whose turn it is to light the chalice
